PROS:
- extremely cheap. i'm honestly surprised at how well it performs for the price point.
- very attractive looking. it's a uniform black, with a textured surface that doesn't attract fingerprints and a glossy trim. it looks like a more expensive laptop.
- it's lightweight and sleek, which is wonderful if you're going to be taking your laptop somewhere frequently. I bring mine to class and it takes up very little space in my backpack; it's thicker than a Macbook, but I don't notice it being any heavier.
- although the processor is soldered on, which prevents it from being changed out, pretty much everything else in this laptop can be easily upgraded or changed out in case of damage. you can replace the CD drive, RAM, HDD, and even the keyboard. the process (other than actually accessing some of these parts, which i will discuss below) is a no-brainer, even for someone with basically no experience working with computer parts.
- it is incredibly quiet. all HDDs make some noise when they're being put under pressure, but even with high-intensity use this laptop is whisper-soft.
- it comes with Windows 10, which integrates well with most programs that are used for school and work purposes. it's not very good at multitasking in its factory conditions (it will "hang" when switching between programs), but with a quick RAM upgrade i'm able to run multiple high-intensity programs at once.
CONS:
- the speakers are shoddy. i don't necessarily consider this a 'con' since it's hard to find good speakers on a laptop, and i rarely if ever use the built-in speakers anyway. i either use headphones or external speakers.
- the screen is not very good, as is common in cheap laptops. it's weakest when outdoors - you will barely be able to see the screen if you take it outside.
- while it can be upgraded, it's not as easy to do so with this particular laptop as it is for others in the Inspiron line. with most Inspiron laptops all you have to do is unscrew the back chassis to upgrade the RAM or replace the hard drive; with this one, you LITERALLY have to dismantle it - the back chassis, the keyboard, and the CD drive have to be removed. this is the biggest con for me, as I bought this laptop to be able to make my own upgrades. I will say, though, that the computer accepts upgrades with ease. after bringing the RAM up to 16GB, it runs like a dream.
in a nutshell, this computer is not going to blow anyone's mind. it has some very legitimate drawbacks. but for such a low price point, i am pretty impressed with this thing. I spent a fortune on my Macbook and while it was a wonderful computer, the inability for a layman to swap out parts was utterly infuriating. since I can upgrade this computer I expect to be able to have it for years to come and be able to keep up with advances in technology.
Edit:
Later that same day it still sucks. Like, I am not a complete moron so I feel like I uninstalled everything unnecessary and the thing is still only running at 360p. Seriously my Mom even laughed and I am not even sure she knows what a laptop is...but she knew the picture sucked cause she looks at crime tv in HD all day. Different issue but I am gonna cintinue to google it up on my old laptop(sad) and see whats up since this one is apparently still using dial-up. If it stays like this I can only recommend this to someone who just doesn't care about video quality at all.
1) Better speed and performance;
2) Something that can stream HD cat videos off of the YouTube;
3) Enough storage to save stuff forever;
4) Something loud enough so I can hear what's going on.
What I've found:
The laptop covers every base I needed covered. I DID spend the $40 for an extra 4 gigs of memory, and the installation of that took 90 seconds and definitely made a difference. It was completely sufficient without, however.
The speakers are truly quite loud and clear! A definite positive and huge selling point, IMHO.
I have learned to love the function-buttons at top being linked to things like volume and screen brightness, rather than typical F5, F6, F7, etc. functions. Easy enough to push the "Fn" button first whenever I need the functionality of the F buttons.
The sole con - the screen is just not the best. Perfect for movies and reading and news and cat videos, but the brightness is just a bit too dim for use outdoors. In the shade, OK...inside, OK...but I wish the screen was a bit brighter, that's all.
BUT...for the price? I may buy a second one just for the heck of it!
Nicely done!
