My family has bought six of these over four years (some were essentially identical earlier units) and they are great! The screen is not so good at off-angles, nor is it as sharp as a higher-priced unit. It is also not as fast as my daughter's Asus Zenbook. However, I can run Photoshop, Word, and a browser on two screens simultaneously and it does not crash. The keyboard and touchpad are adequate. I dropped one of these, and the hard drive died. I have used more expensive drives on other computers that would have survived the fall. I am a Geek, and it was easy for me to put a new drive in by opening up the case. The unit is not heavy because the slower processor and slightly older-tech screen use a lot less power. Therefore the battery and power wart are much smaller. Even so, the battery lasts a long time! I have hauled one of these all over the world giving PowerPoint presentations for two years, and it has never let me down. When it dies, I will get a Zenbook, but for now, this is fine. Treat yours well, don't drop it and you will get a lot of value for the price. I recommend!

Good bang for the buck - very basic

I have had this product for a year now. My biggest complaints are twofold. 1) It disconnects from public wifi quickly and does not play friendly with wifi in general. Most days, I have to reboot it a few times to be able to hook up to a public connection (say a coffee shop). This, of course, may be a function of the networks. But that is networkS - plural. The problem happens in many places, most of the time. 2) If the computer is turned on, worked on, put into sleep mode (e.g., close the lid), and then opened again - the mouse function tends to malfunction. Meaning that you will not be touching the computer at all and the mouse will be moving all over the place. Happens even with an external mouse engaged. This, of course, may be a product of being used in a humid environment; and/or, I clean the laptop with sani-wipes (moisture). Other concerns: 3) battery dies quickly. 4) any type of Windows update takes HOURS to complete. The computer will not let you stop an update and restart it (meaning that you are stuck waiting and waiting for neverending updates while not being able to use the computer no matter how many times you try to stop the updates). 5) Only two USB hubs - one high speed and one not high speed.

Pros: cheap. Good processor speed with the internet. Unusual to have a DVD drive with this light and slim of a laptop - great! Functional. Does not overheat easily. Charges quickly and easily. Easy and intuitive to set up.

The computer itself seems to be great for what I need a computer for. But, since I got less three days use out of it due to a defective cable, and no store carries a replacement cable for this computer, I am waiting for asus to replace the cable. It took two weeks to get them to agree to even "repair" it. (How do you repair a cable?) Two weeks ago, shipped it back to them. They finally admitted last might they had lost it. No idea when they are going to get me a cable. Of course, this has nothing to do with Amazon. Amazon has been excellent in dealing with this...it is just impossible to purchase a replacement cable for this computer....even at the asus store!!!

I would not recommend this computer due to the cheap cable that comes with it. And the inability of getting it replaced other than through asus. The problem is that the power cord is so cheaply made and so lightweight that it over heats to the point that you can smell it melting.

Update on my original review...the 4 month old cable died and asus refuses to replace it even though it is under warranty. Three week later the computer itself died. Asus claimed to have replaced the mother board, discovered the hard drive was defective and ordered a new hard drive. A week later when the hard drive came in, they notified me it was in, but they could not replace it because the warranty had been voided when the hard drive was removed from the computer. They accused me of removing the hard drive. A week later, they "found" the hard drive, supposedly installed it and sent me the computer. Problem is, the day the computer arrived, I was told by phone when it would not come on, it had been sent without the hard drive or the power cable and I needed to return it. There was also a letter in the box with the computer telling me the hard drive had not been installed because I did not pay for it and the computer had arrived without a hard drive.
Sending it back to them is not an option. Now, a week later, they are still refusing to return the hard drive and the power cable. From what I am finding out, this seems to be status qua with their strip mall, store front repair center in Grapevien, Texas.

If you want an inexpensive computer that does what you want it to do, I suggest you buy a Dell. They stand behind their computers. i bought a Dell last week, from Amazon, and so far am pleased...except for it having windows 10! (But so did the asus.)

Kudos to Amazon for helping me with this issue.

This is the third ASUS computer in our home. First one retired, second in my 13.3", and the third is this one for my wife at Christmas. It is a great value. Windows 10 is a bit different than the XP desktop she has been used to for many years, but was easy for her to find her way around. There are more similarities than one realizes. She likes the Start page with all the icons set her way. My Honey is happy!!!

The system is quite responsive with both the touchpad and a Bluetooth mouse that was added. Bluetooth would have been a nice addition. The hard drive is more capacity than she will ever use, but .... There is sufficient memory for anything that she will be doing, with primary interests in a few online games, Facebook, and searching for life's questions. The screen is bright and color is very good and glare doesn't seem to be an issue. We did a Facebook video chat Christmas and it was a great success. The quality of the chat was wonderful and made the day perfect. All in all a GREAT buy from a GREAT company.

There are some personal negatives that don't affect the 5 star rating in any way. ASUS adds too many third party apps on the system. I deleted most of them. The Express Settings which is recommended allows for too much Microsoft monitoring and data gathering. Quickly put IE on the taskbar , blocked Edge, and downloaded Chrome.

Don't hesitate to purchase this system from Amazon. You won't be disappointed.

Not sure what is going on but I shouldn't be having problems after half an hour especially because this isn't a low cost laptop it cost me $400. Doesn't look anything like the pictures either.
